1. WEATHER WOMAN:
Always check the weather of your current, connecting, and final destination. Be informed.
2. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR FLIGHT ATTENDANT:
If the plane is not full, flight attendants can move you to a seat closer to the front of the plane so you can exit the aircraft quicker.
3. Get on your phone. Get on your phone. Get on your phone.
As soon as the aircraft gets within data range, get on the phone to your airline. If you are going to miss your connecting flight, then it is likely that others are too. You want to be the first one to be placed on the next flight so get on the phone and make it happen. If your airline won't immediately place you on the next flight out, they might at least hold the gate for you. Communicating with your airline regarding what is happening means you have a greater chance of them working with you later if you do in fact miss your flight.
4. RUN. TRAVELLER. RUN.
Make sure you know where you need to go once you have stepped off the plane. You can ask the airline personally on the phone or research it while waiting to de-board. Get off the plane and start booking it to the correct terminal and gate.
If you miss your flight:
1. SKIP THE LINES:
If you have missed your flight, don't bother waiting in the long service line to get re-assigned (unless of course the line is short). Again, just get on the phone. Keep in mind, especially in the winter season, flights get cancelled. This means hundreds of people are looking to get placed on a different flight. This also means those lines are long. Again, just get on the phone!
2. PAY UP:
If you are over the two hour rule, you will have to pay the change fee if you are at the beginning of your roundtrip journey. Remember, your entire itinerary (including your return flight) will be cancelled if you don't take the first leg of the journey. This means that you cannot just book a one way ticket, you have to pay the change fee and let the airline book you on the next available flight.
INTERNATIONAL CONNECTING FLIGHTS:
1. DONT FUSS WITH THE PAPERWORK:
Have all of your paperwork filled out in advance. Or just grab the visa and/or customs forms and a pencil and stand in line to fill it out. Don't stand there crunched over a small shelf with everyone else filling out the form. All of those people will finish at the same time as you, which means all of you will be getting in line together. Be the first in line and write fast!
2. THAT BAG LIFE:
Also, on international flights, depending on your itinerary, you will have to pick up your luggage and go through airport security again. This is where priority status with your airline is a plus because your bags will come out first.
3. GET ON THE CELLULAR DEVICE:
Due to various language barriers, some times the best option is to get on the phone and speak with the airline to be reassigned on the next flight or to have them contact the gate agent to have the gate held if possible.
